William Jewell Lighting of the Quad
December 4, 2018
On November 30th, the annual lighting of the quad took place at the William Jewell campus in the Gano Chapel. The event is kicked off by a performance by the William Jewell Orchestra and directed by the school’s music director Dr. Langston Hemenway. Songs included this year were ‘Winds of Change’, ‘a Christmas Medley’, as well as ‘Sleigh Ride’, that featured snow falling from the ceiling as a finale.
As well as festive tunes, the second part of the event is mainly focused on the idea of community and tradition.
Although the weather was dreary and cold, hundreds of students, members of the community, and staff gathered around the quad to hold candles and participate in the lighting ceremony that welcomes the Christmas Season.
Lighting of the quad is also a great event for families. Kids can meet Santa, eat cookies, and drink hot cider or cocoa. Overall this long-standing tradition that brings people together certainly plays an important role in welcoming the holiday season for the community.
