Berry Strong
Since being drafted in 2010, Chiefs Safety Eric Berry has faced the toughest of opponents the NFL has to offer on a weekly basis. None of these opponents could prepare him for his newest battle, his newest foe. On November 24th, just days before the Chiefs would take on the division leading Denver Broncos, a mass was found in the chest of the Chiefs all pro safety. The mass has since been determined to be non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Although treatable, non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma is still a very scary mountain to climb for Berry. The overall 5 year survival rate for patients suffering from this disease is about 69 percent, while the 10 year survival rate is roughly 58 percent, although Eric Berry has never been about the odds. As a rookie in 2010, “the 5th dimension”, as his teammates call him, accomplished the rare feet of playing with the games best in Hawaii for the NFL Pro Bowl. Since then Berry has added two more Pro Bowl appearances, as well as leading the Kansas City Defense to two playoff appearances. Eric is more than ready for the challenge of tackling cancer. In fact, Berry phrased it exactly like that. And how could he word it any different? The horse-fearing, quarterback sacking, fan favorite safety is going to do what he’s always done: tackle.
