An opportunity for students to find local places to volunteer will take place this month. On Tuesday, October 29, Liberty North will be hosting a Community Service fair. It will be in Eagle Pointe from 11:30 am to 12:45 pm, and students can show up as their schedule allows. No sign-up is required.
A variety of organizations have signed up for the event, including youth organizations, assisted living facilities, and thrift stores. Parks and Recreation is dedicated to providing for the Liberty community by creating parks, programs, and facilities. Feed Northland Kids works with Harvesters to make sure food-insecure K-12 children have the food they need to thrive and grow. FosterAdopt Connect works with Missouri and Kansas foster care systems to provide a brighter future for children in foster care. Historic Downtown Liberty preserves the history and promotes future growth of downtown Liberty by working with the local government, business owners, and residents of the area. Hillcrest Hope is a thrift store that provides stability to families facing homelessness, with housing, resources, and community support. Our Lady of Mercy Country Home is an assisted-living works for a calm and caring environment for all residents.
Many students at North are in the A+ program or need to be MSHSAA eligible for sports, fine arts, or performing arts. For either of these, students need a certain amount of volunteer hours. This means that volunteering is very important for certain people. But, there are more reasons to volunteer than just academic requirements.
“The number one thing with volunteering isn’t necessarily building a resume, it’s an act of selflessness. When we have opportunities to help others, we gain new perspectives. We can expand our worldview and learn about ourselves more, because we walk around only looking through our own eyes, and looking at others’ experiences has the power to change us,” AVID teacher Tim Chambers said.
