A Veterans Day ceremony for Liberty Public Schools was held at Liberty North High School on November 11, 2011. A flag raising ceremony followed by a breakfast was held for local veterans, retired staff and current enlisted students.
“Seeing the veterans makes me feel humble because I know all of the things they have given to our country and I know I will one day be in their place,” Liberty High School Junior Bret Kirk said. Kirk is currently enlisted to go into the Army National Guard.
Accompanying the high school students was Fred Millard. He was a Liberty High School student who was set to graduate in 1948 but was sent to Vietnam and unable to obtain his diploma. During the ceremony, current Liberty High School Principal Dr. April Adams presented Millard with his high school diploma.
“It’s mixed feelings when you come to these Ceremonies,” Veteran Jerry Head said, “You can’t help but to think of those who we lost in the battles. I lost 23 friends while in Vietnam. You think about those boys and look at the flag with an overwhelming sense of pride.”
After the ceremony, everyone filtered inside the Liberty North Cafeteria to eat breakfast and remember the memories of the wars in which they fought. Stories were shared and smiles were spread throughout the room as veterans told students and enlistments about their time in battle.
“I met a lot of honorable men, and I was proud to be there to witness the ceremony,” Liberty North Senior and current National Guard enlistee Zach Witthar said.
