Labor Day was this past Monday marking the official end of summer. And while people are putting away their flip flops and swim suits, should they also be putting away their white pants, shoes, and bags too?
Many from when they were little have known the rule “no white after Labor Day”. Some say it originated from snobby, rich women in the late 1800’s, or that it’s just because the fashion editors say so.
“I don’t follow the rule. I think it’s pointless because people should be able to wear whatever they want without being looked down upon because of a dumb rule,” Junior Jamie Slagle said.
The main reason that it came about is because white is more of a summer color. It’s light and reflects the sunlight, so more people wear white when it’s warmer out. When summer ends, the leaves start to change colors, and the weather gets cooler the white is put to the side and the heavier, darker clothes are pulled out.
So is this rule old and out of style? Some people think so, and others don’t.
“I think it’s silly because last week it was ninety degrees and all of my summer clothes are white, so it’s based on the temperature not a certain day,” science teacher Mrs. Black said.
People that want to wear white after labor day without completely breaking the rule, certainly can. Instead of wearing an outfit with a big piece of white, try wearing white accessories. Off white or cream colors are a good replacement for regular white in the winter. They could also try wearing layers of clothes and maybe throwing some white in there.
Whether this rule is just dumb or should be followed by everyone is just opinion. These days fashion is much more relaxed and open to more things. But every year people will still bring up the fact that white after labor day is unacceptable thanks to some women 100 years ago.
