Over the weekend National Honor Society (NHS) took part in their first annual highway clean up. Not only did the seventeen members clean the highway, they also took part in adopting the portion of A-Highway in front of the school. Once a month volunteers will be taken to clean up the portion of the adopted highway allowing a cleaner environment.
“The best part of doing community service with others makes it more enjoyable! Creating a fun atmosphere will cleaning up the city we live in is a win-win situation,” Jill Brock, sponsor said.
NHS is both an academic and service based organization. President Emma Barry wanted to find a way for NHS to complete a group service project, as most service hours are completed individually for the organization. As traffic has increased a significant build up of litter and trash has came up along the shoulder. The ground contacted Missouri Department of Transportation and contracted Liberty North NHS to maintain the roadside for 1/2 mile on A Highway in front of LNHS.
“Adopt A Highway is a great way to clean up our community and promote litter prevention on A highway as people are coming and going from North,” Barry said.
The group will complete at least four “clean up days” per year for three years. Anyone can join in the cleanups. The days will be voted on to see what works best for everyone. By sponsoring this part of the roadside in front of North, not only does it remove litter from the environment, but also improves the appearance of North and the surrounding grounds.
