Sports are a big part of North, and going to state is one of the higher honors. Sophomore Olivia Escobar has just brought home a new achievement for the women’s Varsity tennis team. Escobar is the first women’s tennis player going to state for singles, this has never been done before and Escobar is excited for this new experience.
“I’m obviously nervous for state because I’ve never been but I know the girls who are going and what I’m up against. But I’m feeling pretty confident, not to jinx myself, but I really think it’s going well. All my practicing for it is going well and I just can’t wait till the game. I’m also so excited that I made the cut since there’s a lot of good competition from our neighboring schools like Liberty and Staley are both really good schools. So it’s really hard to make it into the bracket and just to get there is amazing,” Escobar said.
Tennis has always been a part of Escobars life, she originally found the sport through her dad and has grown to love it, playing for almost a decade and now continuing into high school.
“I have been playing tennis for about 8 or so years and I love playing, the game, and the people surrounding me when I play. But I started tennis because when my dad was younger he played tennis for many years and loved it so he wanted to share that with me,” Escobar said.
As an underclassman Escobar is still new to the game but she is grateful for the opportunities tennis has provided her, including giving her the chance to meet new people.
“One of my favorite parts of this year has been getting to know the varsity girls, hanging out with them, meeting all the new people, and just overall becoming closer with the team. They make the game more enjoyable,” Escobar said.
