Liberty North High School was well represented last weekend in the District 15 state basketball tournament. Both Men’s and Women’s basketball team’s advanced to the championship game. The men and women both played the Grain Valley Eagles for the opportunity to advance to “Sweet 16”.
Unfortunately, the girls team fell to Grain Valley with a final score of 39-37. The girls battled all game, and trailed by as many as 10 points in the second half, but they never gave up. The girls mounted a 4th quarter comeback, but fell just short in the end. They were awarded District Runner-Up.
“We fought hard till the end. All the girl’s really gave everything they had. It’s been a fun season and I”m sad to say it’s over,” Junior Hattie Zelenak said.
The Men’s basketball team faced off in a rematch of last year’s district semi-final with the Grain Valley Eagles. After an intense 16 minutes, the boys entered halftime tied at 23-23. The 3rd quarter was much like the first half, with the two teams going back and forth, but as the 4th quarter began Liberty North began to put the game away, creating a 13 point lead and never looking back. The boys won with a final score of 58-45 and were named the District 15 champions and will play the Savannah Savages at Liberty High School on Wednesday night.
“The game was exhilarating. It was back and forth almost all game. We knew it was going to be a tough fight, and in the end we were able to turn it on and come out on top,” Junior Zach Starr said.
