Liberty North men’s and women’s basketball teams competed in the District 15 championship on Saturday, March 2. Both teams clinched the district title, and seniors won their final games in the Liberty North Fieldhouse.
The women defeated Lincoln Prep 43-27, and received the program’s first ever district title.
“The district win shows how far our program has come in the last three years. After losing in the district championship last year, it was a great opportunity to get the win and keep playing for bigger things,” girls basketball coach Saree Morley said.
Senior Audrey Wood was a big part in claiming the title with 22 points.
“It was extremely important for us to get this win because it was our home court. We’ve come so far in three years, and it was important for us to get something to put on the wall in our Fieldhouse, and leave a legacy for future teams. It was a good way to finish, the last ever time I’ll play on that court,” Wood said.
The men played Kansas City East, winning with a score of 64-45. This was their third consecutive time playing in the district championship, and second in a row to win it.
“It was a good accomplishment for our guys. We’re thrilled with it. But, I think if you ask our guys, we want to play in bigger games than that,” men’s basketball coach Chris McCabe said.
It was a great night for both men’s and women’s basketball at Liberty North. Players, parents, students, and teachers could not be happier with the results.
“It was a great milestone for our season. We’ve been working really hard for it. We’re going to keep working hard for the rest of the season,” junior Ian Sanderford said.
The boys will play St. Joe Lafayette in sectionals Wednesday, March 6 at Staley High School at 6:00 pm. The girls will play Smithville in Class 4 sectional playoffs game after the boys game, at 7:45.
