Teaching and coaching can be similar when it comes to putting info or skills into a kid’s mindset, but some decide to do both at the same time. Leading to managing both sides can be a struggle depending on the mindset of the teachers themselves.
“Teaching and coaching at the same time can be difficult. You have to find a balance of when you can focus on both. I set aside times during my week to focus extremely hard on basketball, and then I set aside times to focus on my Special Education paperwork and lesson planning,” basketball coach Sydney Ritter said.
When managing teaching and coaching at the same time, people will try to adopt strategies to try and lessen the amount of stress they can bring.
“I usually try to look at my golf schedule for the week and if I will be missing class time for tournaments and matches then it makes me adjust how and what I will teach for the week,” Golf Coach Tom Regan said.
“Some days are stressful preparing for school without the evening and afternoon to prepare, so I try to get here around 7:15 to 7:30 to get some extra work time.” cross country Coach David Chatlos said.
Even with these plans set to manage both teaching and coaching, they may have to sacrifice time at home and miss family time to prioritize teaching or coaching.
“There are sacrifices to being a coach and a teacher. I have 3 children who I am away from to be a coach. That is a difficult choice I have to make sometimes,” Tennis Coach Zach Osborne said.
“I find time with my family and do things for myself. I love to fish, yet I don’t get to go often,” Football Coach Dan Luellen said.
