Reading is popular activity among people of all ages whether it be with an online source or a hand help book. A book is a gift that can be opened over and over again. Positive attention gravitated towards the opening of Basement Books on August 1, 2024.
“We have been so warmly received by the community. Our opening was a huge success,” owner Stevie Levy said.
Basement Books is located on the Liberty Square and is open various hours throughout the week. They are closed on Mondays and Sundays, but many who have been able to visit have enjoyed the uniqueness of the environment.
“I really liked the character of the place! They had lots of nooks and crannies to help me find different things. Their prices were really good too, and I’d love to go back in the future,” senior Haley Calvin said.
Basement Books is known for incorporating other small businesses, and many believe that it adds more depth.
“I absolutely loved how they fused local artists and artisans into their store,” librarian Connie King said.
Many people are thrilled that The Square is getting the addition of something so original and nostalgic.
“This community is so excited to have this piece of the past back. People worried that small used bookstores were gone for good. This gives them hope,” Levy said.
Students frequently question whether they should go to a bookstore when libraries are much closer, but some would voice the importance of getting that new experience.
“Any time that you can plug into literacy is only going to benefit you; reading is the backbone of your education,” ELA teacher Samantha Goldstein said.
Reading offers lots of variety, and if the person searches long enough, they might find the perfect book for them.
“I think the important thing is that students figure out their own, ‘Why should I read?’ And once they find it, even if they didn’t think they were a reader, they may become one,” librarian Katie Fisher said.
